Elizabeth McPherson joined Glaxo Wellcome in 1998, to serve
as the World-Wide Genetics Policy Advisor. She is responsible to
the Clinical Genetics Group, keeping abreast of the actions of regional,
national and international groups established to advise the public
about ethical and social policy issues associated with genetic innovation.
In this rapidly expanding field, she has stood out as one of the
few involved industry-based people. McPherson has also had the privilege
of being an invited participant in national and international planning
groups, at the World Health Organization (WHO), the Human Genome
Project, and the first partnership meeting between France and the
United States on biotechnology and social issues.
Prior to her role at Glaxo Wellcome, she was actively engaged in
nursing administration for thirty years, most recently at Georgetown
University Hospital in Washington, DC. She has been a consultant
to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and has completed
graduate student internships at the NIH.
McPherson has published articles and given presentations internationally
on the ethical and policy implications of the human genome diversity
project, topics in nursing management, and practical neonatal ethics.
