A leader in international public health issues, especially reproductive health issues for women, Dr. Rivera has maintained a strong interest in health education. Before joining Family Health International (FHI) in 1987, he held a faculty position at the University of Durango in Mexico.

Dr. Rivera currently advises the World Health Organization on contraceptive technology and Latin American reproductive health issues. He has lectured and published extensively in the Americas and across the world on scientific and practical issues in endocrinology, reproductive health, family planning, and public health issues.

At FHI, Dr. Rivera helps to identify areas of collaboration with national and international agencies in the family planning community. Rivera is responsible for overseeing technical and administrative aspects for their Protection of Human Subjects Committee, FHI's Institutional Review Board, and for the development of educational activities in research ethics.
